How To Use The Runes

How To Use The Runes

If you create your own set of runes, make sure that they are of equal size and shape.

The runes were traditionally made from wood or stone, but any material will do. If you have just purchased a set in plastic, do not worry, they will work just fine.

Caring for the runes

Do not allow others to handle the runes. They pick up energy from their handlers and allowing others to use them would imprint them with their energy as well as yours. This will affect the accuracy of the reading. Share on X

Keep them stored in bag of cloth or in a box when they are not in use. Leave a quartz crystal in the bag or box to cleanse them and get rid of negative energy.

Preparing to cast the runes

Before you cast the runes, make sure you are in a place in which you will not be disturbed, and get rid off all distractions.

Clear your mind and write down your question. Make it as simple as possible. If your situation is complicated, divide the matter into smaller bits and ask a question for each. If you ask a complex or confusing question the answer will be impossible to interpret.

If you are unsure of what a complex or confusing question looks like, here is an example:

“If move to Denver to be close to my sick mother, how will that affect my life?”

Well, what do you mean by ‘your life’? What part of it?

Different parts will be affected differently, so be specific. Ask how it will affect your love life, career, economy, living conditions, health, etc.

‘Life’ is complex. Break it down into smaller areas.

Selecting the runes

There are three common ways of selecting the runes.

Drawing: Focus on your question. Reach into the bag and stir the runes gently until one settles in you hand. This is your rune. Repeat this until you have drawn the desired number of runes.

Casting: Focus on your question. Shake the runes, reach into the bag and take a handful of runes and throw them onto a piece of cloth. Read only those who land face up and remove the others. The runes to your left indicate the past, the middle runes are the present, and the runes to the right represent the future.

Grid: Print your preferred spread onto a sheet of paper or cloth. Focus on your question. Shake the runes and pour them onto the grid. The runes landing in the correct squares, or closest to them, are the ones to read.

Spreads

There are many different rune spreads. You can make your spread as detailed and elaborate as you like. Although, the simpler ones will help you avoid confusion.

Until you have had some experience with the runes, I would suggest that you stick with the options below.

Single rune

Gives the answer to a simple question.
Offers general advice or insight.
Tells you what to focus on.
Can be used for daily casting.

Two runes

Present and future.
Problem and solution.
More detailed insight and advice than with one rune. Confirmation by comparison.*
Choosing between two options.**

Three runes

Past, present, future.
Overview, challenge, solution.

*One single rune can mean many different things. If you are unsure of what the advice is, cast another rune to verify. What the two runes have in common is the advice. Berkana and Inguz are both runes of fertility, Fehu and Othila are both runes of wealth and so on.

**Other more elaborate choices spreads are not recommended. Cast each option separately, as both options may lead to the same result. This ensures that the information you get is accurate.

Interpreting the runes

Whether you choose to read rune reversals is a matter of taste.

Some will read the runes the same way whether they land upright or reversed. Others prefer to use reversals as a sign of something not working according to plan, or as warning of a reversal of fortune.

Generally speaking, a reversed rune reverses the meaning. You may get a breakdown instead of a breakthrough, and disease instead of health. Share on X

And if you are asking for advice, a reversed rune is usually a bad omen.

If you are asking if you should invest in a particular company and Fehu appears reversed, it is no longer indicating wealth but a loss of wealth. And the advice would be ‘Do not invest’.
